Athirampattinam Sri Abhaya Varadeeswarar Temple
Sri Abhaya Varatheeswarar Temple at Athirampattinam in Thanjavur District is a sacred Shiva temple associated especially with Thiruvathirai (Arudra) Nakshatra.
Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Abhaya Varatheeswarar, the Lord who grants Abhaya—fearlessness, protection and assurance—to those who surrender at His feet. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Sundaranayaki, also revered as Kadal Partha Nayaki, because the Goddess faces towards the sea.
The temple is counted among the sacred Vaippu Sthalams associated with the Tamil Shaiva tradition and is connected with the devotional heritage of the Nayanmars. The temple is traditionally associated with Thiruvathirai Nakshatra, and devotees born under this star especially visit the temple on their birth-star day to seek the grace of Lord Abhaya Varatheeswarar.
The temple also has an important place in traditional worship for those seeking relief from Rahu–Ketu related difficulties, fear of death, prolonged illness and concerns regarding longevity. Special rituals such as Mrityunjaya Homa and Ayush Homa are performed here for such prayers.
The sacred association with Thiruvathirai is so strong that the ancient identity of the place itself is connected with the star. The settlement was known as Tiru Adhirai Pattinam, later became associated with the name Adhiveerarama Pandian, and eventually came to be known as Athirampattinam.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam
According to Vedic astrology, Lord Shiva governs the Arudra (Thiruvathirai) star. It is a firm astrological belief that Lord Shiva actively walks through this specific celestial zone during Pradosham and Thiruvathirai days. Because Sage Raivata and King Adhiveera Rama Pandian—both born under the Thiruvathirai star—attained massive blessings and success by worshipping here, this temple has been consecrated as the supreme remedy center for this star. Furthermore, the temple is heavily saturated with the protective energy of Shiva, making it a cosmic shield against Rahu-Ketu doshas and the fear of premature death.

Mantra & Slokam
Om Maha Sresthaya Vidhmahe Pasumdanaya Dheemahe Thanno Ardra Prachodayath
Sthala Puranam (Legend)
In ancient times, the Devas and sages faced severe hardship when the Asuras gained the upper hand in battle.
Seeking divine protection, they came to the sacred sphere associated with Thiruvathirai Nakshatra and surrendered themselves to Lord Shiva.
The Lord, moved by their surrender, granted them Abhaya—protection and freedom from fear.
Because Lord Shiva protected those who sought refuge in Him, He came to be worshipped here as Abhaya Varatheeswarar, the Lord who grants protection and assurance.
The very name of the Lord therefore carries the central spiritual message of this temple:
Surrender at the feet of Shiva, and fear gives way to courage.
The land is also infused with the power of Trinetra (the three eyes of Shiva). It is said that Sage Raivata was born from the light emanating from Shiva's third eye on a Thiruvathirai day, and he worshipped the Lord here along with Sage Bhairava.
Parigaram (Remedy)
For Nakshatra Dosha: People born under Thiruvathirai offer Urad Dal Vada (Ulundu Vada) and Kali (a traditional sweet dish), which are the designated Naivedyams for the Arudra star. Prayers are offered using Vilvam (Bael) leaves.
For Longevity: Devotees suffering from life-threatening diseases or a fear of death specifically book and perform Ayush Homam and Maha Mrityunjaya Homam at this temple to invoke the protective grace of Abaya Varatheeswarar.
For Navagraha Dosha: Worshipping the Lord here pacifies the negative effects of Rahu and Ketu in one's horoscope.
What to do when you visit
A meaningful visit can be arranged as follows:
Vinayaka → Abhaya Varatheeswarar → Sundaranayaki / Kadal Partha Nayaki → Dakshinamurthy → Durga → Murugan → Nataraja → Navagrahas → Chandikeswarar
The exact shrine sequence may vary according to the temple's current arrangement.
When you stand before Lord Abhaya Varatheeswarar, spend a few moments in silence.
Rather than making a long list of requests, offer the fear or difficulty that brought you to the temple at His feet.
A simple prayer can be:
“Abhaya Varatheeswara, remove fear from my heart, remove the obstacles in my life, protect my family and bless me with health, peace and strength.”
