Deity
Sri Adhinarayana Perumal
Location
Enkan Village, Tiruvarur Dist., Tamil Nadu

Sri Adhinarayana Perumal Temple at Enkan is an ancient Vishnu temple situated at Enkan village in Tiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Sri Adhi Narayana Perumal, accompanied by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi.

The temple is particularly famous for its extremely rare form of the Lord: the Moolavar is seated upon Garuda, giving devotees a form of Nithya Garuda Seva every day. In most Vishnu temples, Garuda stands in front of the sanctum and the processional deity appears on Garuda during festivals. At Enkan, however, the Lord Himself is permanently seen seated on Garuda in the sanctum.

This extraordinary idol—featuring both the Lord and Garuda—is intricately carved out of a single massive stone, showcasing the brilliance of ancient Chola artisanship and serving as a beacon of hope for devotees seeking immediate divine intervention.

The temple follows the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition and the Sthala Vriksham is Vanni tree.

The temple is also traditionally associated with people born under Mrigashirsha (Mrigasheerisham) Nakshatra and is regarded as a Nakshatra-parihara sthalam.

Best Time to Visit

The absolute best months to visit are Purattasi (mid-September to mid-October) and Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January). Furthermore, planning your visit to align with the Mrigashirsha Nakshatra day of any month yields the maximum astrological benefits.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

This temple is profoundly connected to astrology and karma. Because the king was relieved of his animal face (Mriga meaning animal/deer), this temple became the absolute primary Parihara Sthalam (remedy center) for individuals born under the Mrigashirsha Nakshatra (star).

Additionally, in Hindu theology, Garuda is the sworn enemy of serpents. Because the presiding deity is seated on Garuda, the temple naturally radiates energies that nullify severe Naga Dosham (serpent curses) and Rahu-Ketu afflictions. Finally, a deity seated on a vehicle (Vahana) indicates a state of 'readiness to move'—symbolizing that the Lord is actively waiting to rush to the aid of His devotees and solve their problems swiftly.

Who should worship?

  • People born under the Mrigashirsha Nakshatra (this is a must-visit at least once in their lifetime).
  • Couples seeking children after years of medical or astrological hurdles.
  • Individuals facing prolonged delays in finding a life partner.
  • People suffering from chronic skin conditions, allergies, or unexplained health issues.
  • Families dealing with constant disputes, seeking unity and peace.
  • Those with severe Rahu, Ketu, or Sarpa (snake) Doshams in their horoscope.

Mantra & Slokam

Om Shashisekharaya Vidmahe Maharajaya Dheemahi Tanno Mrigashirsha Prachodayat
Sthala Puranam (Legend)

According to the traditional Sthala Purana, Sage Bhrigu was performing penance to Lord Vishnu in the forest at Enkan.

At that time, a Chola king came to the area for hunting. The noise created by the king and his hunting party disturbed the sage's penance. Angered by the disturbance, Sage Bhrigu cursed the king to acquire the face of a lion.

The king regretted his action and sought the sage's forgiveness and guidance.

Bhrigu Muni advised him to take a sacred bath in the Vettaru, traditionally identified with Vriddha Kaveri, and worship Lord Narayana at Enkan. He further instructed the king to perform his worship on Thai Poosam.

The king followed the instructions. Pleased with his devotion, Sri Narayana Perumal appeared on Garuda, while Lord Murugan appeared on His peacock vehicle. The king was relieved of the curse and regained his original human face.

Because the king's animal-like face was removed through the grace of the Lord, the temple subsequently became associated with Mrigashirsha Nakshatra, with devotees believing that worship here helps alleviate difficulties associated with the Nakshatra.

The unusual form of the Moolavar is said to preserve the same form in which Perumal appeared before the king — seated upon Garuda.

Parigaram (Remedy)

For Child Boon (Santhana Prapthi): The most famous ritual here is the 'Thooli' (cradle) offering. Childless couples bring four full-length sugarcane sticks and a new cotton saree. They tie the saree to the sugarcanes to form a makeshift cradle. Holding the four corners, the couple walks around the outer precinct (prakaram) of the temple three times, praying for progeny.

For Marriage Delays: Unmarried individuals offer special Tulsi (holy basil) garlands and yellow thread to the Lord, praying for the removal of obstacles (Kalyana Dosham).

For Naga Dosham & Skin Ailments: Devotees perform Thirumanjanam (sacred bath) with milk and sandalwood paste to the Perumal-Garuda idol, which is believed to soothe skin diseases and neutralize astrological snake afflictions.

What to do when you visit

Purification: Before entering, sprinkle a few drops of water from the Vettaru River on your head as a symbol of purification.

First Darshan: Enter the temple and first seek the blessings of Lord Narthana Vinayagar (Dancing Ganesha) located in the precinct.

Main Sanctum: Proceed to the main Garbhagriha. Offer your deep prayers to Lord Adhi Narayana Perumal seated majestic on Garuda.

Consorts: Visit the adjacent shrines of Goddess Sridevi and Goddess Bhoodevi to seek wealth, prosperity, and patience.

Circumambulation: Walk around the inner corridor (Pradakshina) three times quietly, chanting 'Om Namo Narayanaya'.

Hanuman Shrine: Conclude your visit by praying at the Lord Hanuman shrine for courage and protection.

Before You Visit

Supplies: Enkan is a small rural village. If you intend to perform the 'Thooli' ritual, buy the sugarcane and saree in the main town of Tiruvarur or Koradacheri before heading to the village, as you may not find them locally.

Pooja Items: Buy Tulsi garlands, flowers, and fruits in the nearby town.

Attire: Wear traditional Indian clothing (Dhoti for men; Saree/Churidar for women). Avoid shorts or sleeveless tops.

Cash: Carry sufficient cash in smaller denominations for offerings, as rural areas might have limited digital payment infrastructure.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Thirumanjanam: Performing Abhishekam (holy bath) using Milk, Curd, Honey, Coconut water, and Sandalwood paste on Saturdays, Wednesdays, and on the day of Swathi Nakshatra (Garuda's star) is incredibly powerful.

Tulsi Archana: Offering a garland made of fresh Tulsi leaves and performing an archana (chanting of 108 names) ensures success in new ventures.

Note: Abhishekam requires prior booking with the temple priest.

Festivals

Margazhi Vaikunta Ekadasi (Dec-Jan): The most crowded and auspicious day, celebrating the opening of the gates of heaven.

Purattasi Saturdays (Sep-Oct): The Tamil month of Purattasi is highly sacred for Lord Vishnu. All four/five Saturdays witness grand Garuda Seva.

Sri Krishna Janmashtami / Gokulashtami (Aug-Sep).

Garuda Panchami: Special prayers dedicated specifically to Lord Garuda.
