Sri Brahma Gnanapureeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple located at Keezha Korukkai, near Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. The temple is especially known as a traditional Avittam (Dhanishta) Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam.

The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Sri Brahma Gnanapureeswarar, and the Goddess is Sri Pushpavalli Amman, also known as Pushpambigai. The name Brahma Gnanapureeswarar signifies the Lord who bestowed divine knowledge upon Brahma.

According to the temple's Sthala Puranam, Brahma, the creator, worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred place and received the wisdom necessary to resume his cosmic responsibility. This divine event is traditionally associated with an Avittam Nakshatra day in the Tamil month of Avani, giving the temple its special significance for people born under Avittam.

One of the most distinctive features of this temple is the presence of two Nandhis in the same mandapam, positioned in front of the principal deity and the Goddess's shrine. The temple also has several noteworthy sculptures and shrines, including Vinayaka, Murugan with Valli and Deivanai, Adhikara Nandi with his consort, Bhairava forms, Dakshinamurthy, Surya, Chandra, Brahma, Durga and Ardhanareeswarar.

The temple's sacred tank is known as Chandra Pushkarini. The shrine is associated with spiritual knowledge, education, family harmony, removal of obstacles and the traditional worship of Avittam-born devotees.

Best Time to Visit

Visiting on the Avittam Nakshatra day of any month yields the absolute best astrological benefits. The Tamil month of Masi (Feb-Mar) for Shivaratri and Purattasi (Sep-Oct) for Navaratri are highly auspicious for overall worship.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

Sri Brahma Gnanapureeswarar Temple is traditionally associated with Avittam Nakshatra, also known as Dhanishta or Shravishtha.

Avittam is the 23rd Nakshatra in the standard 27-Nakshatra system. Its planetary ruler is Mars (Sevvai/Kuja), and its presiding deities are the Ashta Vasus, the eight divine beings associated with natural and cosmic principles.

The temple's connection with Avittam arises from the traditional account of Lord Shiva granting Brahma the knowledge required to fulfil his divine responsibility on an Avittam day.

For this reason, Avittam-born devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for knowledge, education, confidence, family welfare and progress in their endeavours.

The temple's distinctive twin-Nandi arrangement also forms part of its traditional worship practices. Devotees offer special prayers to the Nandhis, seeking the removal of obstacles and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.

The principal spiritual message is that knowledge must be accompanied by humility, devotion and right action. The worship of Brahma Gnanapureeswarar is therefore meaningful not only for those facing difficulties but also for anyone wishing to pursue education, a new responsibility or a fresh beginning with clarity and dedication.

Who should worship?

  • Individuals born under the Avittam (Dhanishta) Nakshatram.
  • People undergoing Mars (Chevvai/Mangal) Mahadasa or Bhukti.
  • Devotees facing delays in marriage or childbirth (seeking relief from Kuja/Chevvai Dosha).
  • Musicians, artists, and public figures seeking fame and recognition (Avittam is the star of rhythm and fame).
  • Students pursuing higher education or individuals trying to recover lost knowledge/skills.

Mantra & Slokam

Avittam (Dhanishta) Nakshatra is ruled by the Ashta Vasus (the Eight Deities of abundance and rhythm) and its planetary lord is Mars (Chevvai/Mangal). Chanting the following mantras brings immense wealth, fame, clarity of thought, and removes marital obstacles.

Om Vasubhyo Vidmahe Thathva Bodhaaya Dheemahi Thanno Dhanishta Prachodayaat
Sthala Puranam (Legend)

This temple encompasses two major legends.

Brahma Regaining Knowledge

According to the puranas, the Asuras (demons) Madhu and Kaitabha stole the sacred Vedas and hid them under the ocean. Lord Vishnu defeated the Asuras and retrieved the Vedas, handing them back to Lord Brahma. However, Brahma realized he had lost his deep comprehension and the divine wisdom required for creation. On Vishnu's advice, Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati came to Keezha Korukkai, bathed in the Chandra Pushkarani, and offered floral worship to Lord Shiva. Pleased with their devotion, Shiva restored Brahma's lost knowledge. Hence, the Lord is known as Brahma Gnana Pureeswarar, and the Goddess, worshipped with flowers by Brahma, is known as Pushpambigai.

The Devotion of Gorakka Siddha

A great sage named Gorakka Siddha (Korakkar) once rested in a hut here after a tiring journey. When he woke up, he found a woman sleeping nearby and realized he had accidentally clutched the end of her saree. To maintain his absolute purity and punish himself for the unintentional mistake, he cut off his own hand. He then prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness. Moved by his severe devotion, Shiva restored his hand. Because of this incident, the place came to be known as Korukkai.

Parigaram (Remedy)

For Avittam Nakshatram: Avittam starrers are advised to visit the temple on their star days. Performing Abhishekam to Lord Brahma Gnana Pureeswarar and offering Bilva leaves dissolves negative karma and doshas.

The Twin Nandis Remedy: Uniquely, this Shiva temple has two Nandis in the main mandapam (one facing Lord Shiva and another facing Goddess Pushpambigai). Devotees facing severe life obstacles, financial ruin, or delayed marriages offer garlands made of Cashews and Groundnuts to these twin Nandis. This is a highly specific and powerful remedy unique to this temple.

For Wisdom & Education: Students and scholars pray to Goddess Pushpambigai and Lord Shiva for sharp memory, concentration, and success in academics.

What to do when you visit

Upon entry, worship Lord Ganesha. Proceed to the main Garbhagriha to seek the blessings of Lord Brahma Gnana Pureeswarar. Take special note of the two Nandis placed uniquely in the hall and offer your prayers (or the specific cashew/groundnut garland) to them. Then, worship Goddess Pushpambigai, seeking her grace for family well-being. Make sure to circumambulate (pradakshina) the temple to worship the specific shrines of Lord Brahma, Saraswati, Murugan with Valli-Deivanai, and Lord Bhairava.

Before You Visit

Keezha Korukkai is a small, historically rich village on the outskirts of Kumbakonam. Since the temple is slightly tucked away, you won't find large commercial pooja shops immediately outside. It is highly recommended to buy the cashews, groundnuts, and flowers in Kumbakonam or Patteeswaram before heading to the temple. If you plan to offer the special Nandi garlands, string them yourself or prepare them beforehand.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Special poojas are performed exclusively on all Avittam Nakshatram days every month. Mondays are highly significant for Rudrabhishekam (sacred bath with Vedic chants) to dissolve negative karma. Pradosham is also observed with great devotion.

Festivals

Maha Shivaratri: One of the most important annual observances at the temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Avani Avittam: Especially relevant to the temple's Sthala Puranam, which connects the Avittam Nakshatra day with Brahma receiving divine knowledge.

Monthly Avittam Nakshatra: Avittam-born devotees may arrange special worship on their Janma Nakshatra day.

Pradosham: Observed twice in most lunar months and dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Vinayaka Chaturthi: A special occasion for worshipping Lord Vinayaka.

Karthigai Deepam: The festival of sacred lights is observed in the wider Tamil Shaiva tradition; confirm the temple's specific arrangements locally.

Festival schedules and the scale of celebrations may vary from year to year. Confirm dates and rituals with the temple before making special travel arrangements.
