Keezhapungudi Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple – Uthiradam Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam
Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Keezhapungudi in Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu, is a sacred Shiva temple specially associated with Uthiradam (Uttara Ashadha) Nakshatra, the 21st among the 27 Nakshatras.
The presiding deity is Sri Brahmapureeswarar, also worshipped as Sri Sundareswarar, and the Goddess is Sri Brahmavidyambikai, worshipped locally as Meenakshi Amman and Poongudiyal.
The temple is traditionally regarded as a Uthiradam Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam. Uthiradam-born devotees visit the temple on their Janma Nakshatra day to seek relief from horoscope-related difficulties, progress in life, family welfare and the blessings of the Divine Mother.
The temple's Sthala Puranam is connected with Lord Brahma. Brahma, who performs the sacred function of creation, became proud of his position and considered himself superior to Lord Shiva. Shiva humbled Brahma by severing one of his five heads. Brahma then came to this sacred place and worshipped Lord Shiva to obtain relief from the sin associated with his act of pride.
Because Lord Shiva blessed Brahma here, He came to be known as Brahmapureeswarar.
The Goddess is known as Brahmavidyambikai, the Mother who grants the wisdom of Brahma Vidya. She is also worshipped as Poongudiyal and, in the later temple tradition, as Meenakshi.
The temple has a distinctive connection with Uthiradam through Goddess Poongudiyal. Traditional temple accounts describe Uthiradam as the senior-most of the 27 Nakshatras, and the other Nakshatra deities are said to honour Poongudiyal through Padapuja.
Another remarkable feature is the separate shrine of Lord Nataraja, who appears as though He is preparing Himself for His cosmic dance, with His matted locks arranged in readiness for the dance.
The temple also has a five-tier Rajagopuram, a sacred temple tank identified as Brahma Theertham, and a Kadamba tree as the Sthala Vriksham.
For devotees born under Uthiradam, this temple is traditionally visited for spiritual protection, removal of obstacles, progress, family harmony and the fulfilment of important prayers.

Best Time to Visit
For Uthiradam Nakshatra worship, the monthly Uthiradam Nakshatra day is more important than a particular month.
However, some periods have special significance.
Chithirai – April to May : This period is especially important for the Thirukalyanam and Tamil New Year Homa.
Margazhi – December to January : Margazhi Thiruvathirai is particularly meaningful because of the temple's Nataraja shrine.
Karthikai – November to December : Karthikai Mondays are important for Shankabhishekam.
Maasi – February to March : Maha Shivaratri and Masi Magam make this an important period for Shiva worship.
Uthiradam Nakshatra Day : For a person undertaking Uthiradam Nakshatra Pariharam, the monthly Uthiradam day is the most directly relevant.
For comfortable travel in Sivaganga District, October to February is generally more pleasant than the peak summer months.
Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam
The Uthiradam Nakshatra is ruled by the Sun (Surya) and its presiding deities are the Vishwadevas (the Universal Gods). Astrologically, Uthiradam represents leadership, heavy responsibilities, and overcoming deep-seated obstacles. Since Lord Brahma himself overcame a massive cosmic block (loss of his profession/creation) by praying at this exact energetic vortex, the temple vibrates with the power of "restoration and leadership." Worshipping here specifically aligns the cosmic energies for Uthiradam natives, removing career stagnation, curses, and ensuring they regain any lost wealth or status.
Who should worship?
- Individuals born under the Uttara Ashadha (Uthiradam) Nakshatra.
- People undergoing Sun (Surya) Mahadasa or Bhukti.
- Those whose horoscope shows a difficult or afflicted Sun may traditionally undertake Uthiradam worship as part of Surya-related spiritual remedies.
- Those seeking blessings from the Vishwadevas (Universal Gods) and Lord Ganesha.
- Leaders facing extreme loneliness/stress, or those struggling to finish long-term projects (lack of endurance).
Mantra & Slokam
Uthiradam is ruled by the Sun (Surya) and the Vishwadevas. Chanting this grants immense leadership qualities, success in long-term goals, and courage.
Om Viswe Dhevaaya Vidmahe Mahaa Mallaaya Dheemahi Thanno Uthirada Prachodayaat
Sthala Puranam (Legend)
Brahma's Pride
In ancient times, Lord Brahma was entrusted with the sacred responsibility of creation. Because Brahma possessed five heads and performed the work of creation, pride arose within him. He began to regard himself as equal to or even superior to Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva, who removes ignorance and pride, decided to teach Brahma the truth of divine supremacy. Shiva severed one of Brahma's five heads. Brahma realised his mistake and understood that creation itself operates only through the grace of the Supreme Lord. He undertook worship of Lord Shiva at several sacred places.
One of the places where Brahma performed Shiva worship was Keezhapungudi. Brahma performed sincere worship here and received the grace of Lord Shiva. Because Shiva granted His grace to Brahma at this place, the Lord became known as Brahmapureeswarar.
Brahmavidyambikai – Poongudiyal
The Goddess of the temple is Brahmavidyambikai, the embodiment of divine knowledge. She is also worshipped as Poongudiyal. The traditional Uthiradam Nakshatra story gives special importance to Poongudiyal. Uthiradam is described as the senior-most Nakshatra, and the deities of the other 26 Nakshatras perform Padapuja to Poongudiyal. This gives the Goddess an important place in the Nakshatra tradition of the temple.
Nataraja – Ready for the Cosmic Dance
The separate Nataraja shrine is one of the most beautiful features of the temple. Nataraja is not shown in an ordinary static dancing posture. He appears as though He is preparing Himself to begin His cosmic dance, with His matted hair gathered and arranged. The form reminds devotees of Shiva's eternal Ananda Tandava, the cosmic dance through which creation, preservation and transformation are expressed.
Temple Reconstruction
The ancient temple declined over time and eventually required reconstruction. The present temple represents the continuation of the ancient worship tradition of Brahmapureeswarar and Poongudiyal. Thus, even though the physical temple underwent reconstruction, the sacred tradition of Brahma's worship of Shiva continued.
Parigaram (Remedy)
For Uthiradam Nakshatram: Uthiradam starrers must visit this temple on their star days. Performing Abhishekam to Lord Brahmapureeswarar and offering white vastrams (clothes) removes all planetary doshas.
Regaining Lost Status/Job: Those who have lost their jobs or suffered demotions should offer sweet pongal and garland the Lord with Kadamba flowers (or available fragrant flowers) to regain their positions.
For Brahma Hatya Dosha: Individuals suffering from severe generational curses (like Brahma Hatya Dosham) light ghee lamps in the temple and take a symbolic dip (or sprinkle water) from the Brahma Theertham.
What to do when you visit
Upon entering, worship Lord Ganesha. Proceed to the main Garbhagriha to seek the blessings of Lord Brahmapureeswarar (facing East). Then, worship Goddess Brahmanayagi (Meenakshi). Do not forget to pray at the shrines of Lord Dakshinamurthy and Lord Bhairava, as they hold special significance in Shiva temples associated with Brahma's penance. Spend a few minutes meditating near the Kadamba tree in the courtyard.
