Komal Sri Krupakupareswarar Temple

Deity
Sri Kirubakubareshwarar
Location
Komal (near Kuttalam), Mayiladuthurai Dist., Tamil Nadu

Sri Kirubakubareshwarar Temple at Komal is an ancient Shiva temple dedicated to Lord Sri Kirubakubareshwarar, with Goddess Sri Annapoorani as the Divine Consort. The temple is particularly renowned as the Parigara Sthalam for people born under Hastham (Hasta) Nakshatra, the 13th of the 27 Nakshatras.

The temple is situated in Komal village in Kuttalam Taluk of Mayiladuthurai District, along the Mayiladuthurai–Kumbakonam region. It is approximately 15 km by road from Mayiladuthurai.

The principal deity is Sri Kirubakubareshwarar, and the Ambal is Sri Annapoorani. The temple is especially associated with the sacred story of Goddess Parvati's descent to earth in the form of a cow, her worship of Lord Shiva, and her reunion with Him on a Hastham Nakshatra day.

Because of this powerful connection between the deity, the sacred cow worship and Hastham Nakshatra, devotees born under Hastham visit this temple for Nakshatra Parigaram, removal of obstacles, peace of mind, forgiveness for past mistakes and divine grace.

The temple is also known for the distinctive practice of Go Pooja (cow worship). Devotees visiting specifically for Hastham Parigaram may arrange Go Pooja through the temple priest.

Best Time to Visit

The temple can be visited year-round. However, visiting on the Hastham Nakshatra day of any month yields the absolute best astrological benefits. The Tamil months of Purattasi (for Navaratri) and Aippasi (for Annabishekam) are also highly auspicious.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

The importance of this temple as a Hastham Nakshatra Parigara Sthalam comes directly from its Sthala Puranam.

Hastham is associated with the hand, and the Sthala Puranam itself revolves around the divine light associated with Shiva's hand — Hastha-varna Jyoti. The reunion of Parvati and Shiva occurred here on a Hastham Nakshatra day.

Therefore, this temple is traditionally approached by Hastham-born devotees for:

  • Nakshatra Dosha Pariharam
  • Relief from recurring obstacles
  • Peace of mind
  • Seeking forgiveness for past mistakes
  • Removal of confusion and instability
  • Divine protection
  • Improvement in general wellbeing
  • Seeking grace in important life decisions
  • Strengthening one's spiritual discipline

The temple is not merely a generic Shiva temple recommended for Hastham; its own Sthala Puranam establishes the direct connection between Hastham, Shiva's grace, Parvati's penance and Go Pooja.

Who should worship?

  • Individuals born under the Hastham (Hasta) Nakshatra.
  • People facing unexplained failures in their business, career, or education.
  • Couples dealing with misunderstandings (seeking unity, as Shiva and Parvati reunited here).
  • Those seeking relief from poverty and wishing for agricultural or financial prosperity.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

The Sthala Puranam of Komal is closely connected with the divine play of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Once, Goddess Parvati wished to understand how Lord Shiva, the Supreme Lord, conducts and sustains the activities of the entire universe.

In a playful moment, Parvati placed her hands over Shiva's eyes. Since the Sun and Moon are regarded as the Lord's eyes, the moment His eyes were covered, the entire universe was plunged into darkness and the cosmic activities were brought to a standstill.

Parvati immediately realised the seriousness of what had happened and sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva instructed her to undertake penance on earth and told her that His divine Hastha-varna Jyoti, the radiant light associated with His hand, would manifest in the earthly realm. She was to find that divine light and reunite with Him.

Parvati descended to earth in the form of a cow and began searching for the divine presence. Lord Vishnu accompanied and assisted her in this sacred search.

Finally, on a Hastham Nakshatra day, the divine Jyoti manifested at this sacred place at Komal. Parvati, in the form of the cow, worshipped Shiva here and attained reunion with Him.

The divine grace bestowed by Shiva upon Parvati is associated with the name Kirubakubareshwarar — the Lord who bestows Kirupa, divine grace.

The connection with the cow is also central to the identity of the place. The sacred tradition connects the name Komal with the divine episode of Parvati appearing here as a cow.

Thus, the temple became especially sacred for Hastham Nakshatra.

The sacred tradition further holds that worshipping Lord Kirubakubareshwarar at this place helps devotees overcome the consequences of past actions and receive the Lord's grace. Go Pooja is therefore particularly significant here.

Some accounts also describe the original temple as an old Chola-period structure, with the surviving architectural elements reflecting its antiquity.

Parigaram (Remedy)

Nakshatra Parigaram: Individuals born under the Hastham star must visit this temple on their specific star day (Hastham). Offering vastras (clothes) and performing Archana to Kirubakubareshwarar and Mother Annapoorni removes life's hurdles.

Gopooja (Cow Worship): Since the Goddess took the form of a cow to worship the Lord here, it is a highly revered tradition to perform pooja to a cow and its calf and lead them around the temple corridors with full honors. This brings immense wealth and family peace.

For Sustenance (Annadhanam): Worshipping Mother Annapoorni here and donating food ensures the family will never face poverty or hunger.

What to do when you visit

As you enter, pray at the Dwajasthambam (flagpole). Worship Lord Kirubakubareshwarar in the main sanctum (facing East). Then, proceed to the South-facing shrine of Goddess Annapoorni. Circumambulate the temple (Pradakshina) to worship the Koshta deities, including Vinayagar, Murugan, Lingodhbhavar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Surya, and Bhairavar. Conclude your visit by spending a few moments in silent meditation, absorbing the temple's serene energy.

Before You Visit

Komal is a small, quiet village. While there are a few basic shops, it is advisable to buy your pooja items, flower garlands, and offerings in the nearby town of Kuttalam (Kutralam) before reaching the village. If you intend to perform special rituals like Gopooja or specific star-day Abhishekams, contact the temple priest in advance.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Go Pooja is the most distinctive ritual associated with this temple.

The Sthala Puranam itself centres on Goddess Parvati appearing as a cow and worshipping Lord Shiva. Consequently, worship of the sacred cow has an especially important place in the devotional tradition of this temple.

Devotees who wish to perform Go Pooja should make arrangements with the temple priest beforehand. Visitor accounts also specifically mention the priest arranging the Go Pooja and associated offerings when informed in advance.

Abhishekam

Devotees may also arrange Abhishekam to Sri Kirubakubareshwarar, subject to the temple's daily arrangements.

For a Hastham Parigaram visit, a simple Abhishekam + Archana + Go Pooja + Pradakshina is a meaningful combination.

Do not assume that a particular Abhishekam package or fee is permanently available; confirm with the temple before travelling.

Festivals

Maha Shivaratri: Celebrated grandly in Feb-Mar with all-night poojas.

Navaratri: Special alankarams (decorations) are made for Goddess Annapoorni during the 9 days of Navaratri.

Thirukarthigai, Arudra Darisanam, and Annabishekam are other major festivals celebrated with traditional fervor.
