Kuruvithurai Sri Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal Temple is one of the important Chithirai Nakshatra Parihara Sthalams of Tamil Nadu and is situated on the banks of the Vaigai River near Cholavandan in Madurai District.

The presiding deity is Sri Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal, who stands majestically with Sri Sridevi and Sri Bhoodevi. One of the most distinctive features of the temple is the traditional sandalwood form of the principal deity and His consorts. The temple is also closely associated with Guru Bhagavan (Jupiter), who is worshipped here in a rare Vaishnava setting as Yoga Guru.

Guru Bhagavan and Sri Chakrathazhwar have a particularly important presence in this temple. Temple traditions describe both as Swayambhu forms, and Guru Bhagavan appears in a posture of meditation and worship facing Lord Perumal.

The temple is therefore significant on two spiritual levels:

  1. Chithirai Nakshatra Pariharam
  2. Guru Bhagavan / Jupiter Pariharam

The connection between these two aspects comes from the sacred story of Guru Bhagavan and his son Kacha, and from the divine appearance of Lord Narayana on a magnificent chariot on a Chithirai Nakshatra day.

The very name Chitra Ratha Vallabha carries this sacred memory: Chitra refers to the Chithirai star/month tradition, Ratha means chariot, and Vallabha denotes the beloved Lord.

The temple is also ancient in character. Heritage sources place the present granite structure in the early medieval Pandyan period, with inscriptions on the prakaram walls dating back many centuries.

Best Time to Visit

Chithirai (April–May) is especially meaningful because the temple's very identity is connected with the Chithirai Nakshatra and the divine appearance of Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal.

For devotees specifically performing Chithirai Nakshatra Pariharam, Chithirai month combined with the Chithirai Nakshatra is particularly auspicious.

Best for Guru Pariharam: Thursday / Guru Peyarchi

If your primary purpose is Guru Pariharam, Thursday is traditionally preferred.

Guru Peyarchi is another major occasion, but it can be crowded.

Best for Comfortable Travel: October–February

For devotees more concerned with weather and comfortable travel, the cooler months from approximately October to February are generally easier for visiting the Madurai region.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

This temple is the designated Parihara Sthalam for the Chithirai Nakshatra because Lord Vishnu descended to Earth on his divine chariot (Chitra Ratha) exactly on a Chithirai Nakshatra day in the Tamil month of Chithirai to grant darshan to Guru Bhagavan. The cosmic imprint of this star is permanently etched into the temple. Additionally, because Guru Bhagavan’s deepest prayers to save his child were answered here, this temple resonates with unmatched Jupiter (Guru) energy, making it a supreme dosha-nivarthi (remedy) center.

Who should worship?

By Planet — Jupiter

  • Marriage Delays: Among the Navagrahas, Guru (Jupiter) is considered a completely auspicious planet. A benevolent aspect from Guru brings immense benefits. Furthermore, marriage materializes when Guru gains strength in the horoscope (including during transits). Therefore, those facing obstacles to marriage should worship Him.
  • Progeny/Childbirth Issues: As the Putra Karaka (significator of children), his grace is necessary for couples struggling to conceive.
  • Financial Struggles: Guru is the Dhana Karaka (significator of wealth); a weak Guru leads to debt and lack of savings.
  • Educational Hurdles: Students lacking concentration or seeking higher education/research success need Guru's blessings.
  • People with Guru Dosha: Those experiencing Guru Neecha (debilitated), Guru Chandala Dosha (conjunction with Rahu/Ketu), or going through a tough Guru Mahadasha or Guru Peyarchi (transit).

By Nakshatra

  • Individuals born under the Chithirai (Chitra) Nakshatra.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

The temple's purana revolves around cosmic diplomacy and rescue. A fierce war was raging between the Devas and Asuras. The Asuras' Guru, Sukracharya, possessed the Mrita Sanjeevini mantra, which could bring the dead back to life. To learn this secret, the Devas' Guru (Jupiter/Brihaspati) sent his son, Kacha, as a student to Sukracharya. During his stay, Sukracharya's daughter, Devayani, fell in love with Kacha.

The Asuras, realizing Kacha's motive, killed him and mixed his ashes in a drink given to Sukracharya. Using his mantra, Sukracharya brought Kacha back to life, who tore out of Sukracharya's stomach. Kacha then used the same mantra to revive Sukracharya. Having fulfilled his mission, Kacha wanted to return, but Devayani demanded he marry her. When Kacha refused (since he was reborn from her father's stomach, making them siblings), a furious Devayani trapped him by raising seven massive mountains.

Desperate to save his son, Guru Bhagavan performed intense penance on the banks of the Vaigai River. Answering his prayers, Lord Vishnu appeared on a magnificent, flying chariot (Chitra Ratha) and hurled his divine discus (Chakrath Azhwar) to shatter the mountains and rescue Kacha. The place where Guru performed penance was "Guru Iruntha Thurai," which later became Kuruvithurai.

The Chithirai Connection

The divine appearance of Perumal on the Chitra Ratha is connected with the Chithirai Nakshatra.

The Lord appeared to Guru Bhagavan on a Chithirai star day in a magnificent chariot. This sacred event established the connection between the temple and Chithirai Nakshatra.

Thus Chithirai-born devotees have a special spiritual connection with this temple.

Parigaram (Remedy)

For Chithirai Starrers: People born under the Chithirai star should visit this temple on their star days. They perform Thirumanjanam (sacred bath) for the Lord and offer new Vastras (clothes) and Tulsi garlands to alleviate life’s struggles.

For Guru Dosham: Devotees suffering from adverse Jupiter effects (Guru Dosham) light ghee lamps and offer yellow clothes/chickpeas (Kondakadalai) to Guru Bhagavan on Thursdays.

Protection (Chakrath Azhwar): Praying to the self-manifested Chakrath Azhwar here provides an immediate protective shield against black magic, enemies, and sudden accidents.

What to do when you visit

Upon entering, worship the imposing, 10-foot-tall Sandalwood idol of Lord Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal facing East. Then, seek the blessings of Goddess Shenbagavalli. In the outer corridor, you will witness a highly rare astrological and architectural setup: Guru Bhagavan faces West, directly looking at Lord Narayana with folded hands, praying. Right next to Him is Lord Chakrath Azhwar. You must offer prayers at this specific shrine. Uniquely, all 12 Alwars (Vaishnavite saints) are seated together here in a single row; bow to them before concluding your visit.

Before You Visit

Kuruvithurai is a rural village setting bordered by the Vaigai river. Thursdays and Chithirai star days attract massive crowds. The famous Guru Peyarchi (Jupiter transit) day draws lakhs of devotees. If you plan to visit on a Thursday, arrive as early as 7:30 AM to avoid long queues. Buy Tulsi and yellow flower garlands from Madurai or Sholavandan towns, as local availability might be limited on non-festival days.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Guru Peyarchi Homam: Monumental fire rituals (Homams) are conducted when planet Jupiter transits to a new zodiac sign.

Chitra Pournami: Grand special poojas are held on the full moon day of the Chithirai month.

Thirumanjanam: Performing the sacred bath for the Sandalwood Perumal is considered highly powerful, but it requires prior booking with the temple priests.

Learn More

In Vedic astrology, Guru (Brihaspati) is the preceptor of the Gods. He represents expansion, wisdom, optimism, higher education, philosophy, and spirituality. While Mercury (Budha) represents raw intellect and primary schooling, Jupiter represents true wisdom, university-level education, morals, and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. A strong Jupiter makes a person a good teacher, advisor, lawyer, or philosopher. He acts as a protective shield in a horoscope; it is said that "Guru's aspect (drishti) removes a million doshas" (Guru paarkka kodi nanmai).

Charity / Daana

Charity done on Thursdays yields the best results for strengthening Jupiter.

  • Donate yellow-colored items like Turmeric, Chana Dal (Bengal gram), and bananas to the poor or to temples.
  • Donating study materials, books, or paying school fees for underprivileged children is highly favored by Guru (as he is the planet of education).
  • Feeding cows with bananas, jaggery, or soaked chana dal on Thursdays.
