Best Time to Visit

For a relatively peaceful pilgrimage, ordinary weekdays outside major festival periods are preferable.

For devotees specifically seeking the grandest experience, Vinayagar Chaturthi is the most important period, but it also brings very large crowds.

For a special spiritual experience without necessarily visiting during the ten-day festival, Sankatahara Chaturthi is another meaningful time to visit.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

The temple is considered a powerful Parigara Sthalam (remedy temple) for two main reasons. First, Lord Ganesha here is called "Karpaga Vinayagar" because, like the mythical Karpagam tree, he grants all the wishes of his devotees, especially regarding wealth and prosperity. Kubera, the Lord of Wealth, is believed to have worshipped here. Second, the temple houses a shrine for Goddess Kathyayini Amman, who is intensely worshipped to remove marriage obstacles.

Furthermore, this temple serves as a place of remedy for those born under the Karasai Karana.

Who should worship?

This temple serves as a place of remedy for those born under the Karasai Karana.

Devotees who are facing obstacles in important undertakings, seeking success in new beginnings, or praying for the fulfilment of righteous wishes may worship Sri Karpaga Vinayagar. Those experiencing marriage-related obstacles may also worship Kathyayini Amman, as the temple tradition associates her worship with relief from Sevvai Dosham affecting marriage.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

The temple's origins trace back over 1,600 years to the early Pandya or pre-Pallava period. The main idol of Ganesha is incredibly unique: He faces North, has only two arms (instead of the usual four), and sits in the Ardha Padmasana posture (half-lotus) without his stomach touching the seat. His trunk curls to the right, making him a highly auspicious Valampuri Vinayagar. The cave also houses a 7th-century Shiva Lingam known as Thiruveesar.

Pillayarpatti is an ancient sacred settlement whose identity is closely connected with Lord Vinayaga. The temple is a rock-cut cave temple, and inscriptions found within the temple provide important evidence regarding its antiquity. More than fifteen inscriptions have been identified at the temple.

The principal deity is known as Karpaga Vinayagar and also as Desi Vinayaga Pillaiyar in the temple tradition.

The temple tradition associates the Shiva shrine with Marudheesar, reflecting the ancient worship of the Marudha tree. A remarkable sculpture of Pasupatheeswarar, depicting a cow worshipping Lord Shiva by offering milk, is another important feature of the temple. The temple tradition also records the association of Kubera, the deity of wealth, with this sacred place.

The temple has several unusual features: three Shiva Lingas and three Goddess shrines are present within the same sacred complex. The combination of these ancient rock-cut sculptures, inscriptions and associated deities gives Pillayarpatti an important place in the religious and architectural heritage of Tamil Nadu.

The temple's own traditional account also highlights the special spiritual significance of worshipping the north-facing Valampuri Vinayagar.

Parigaram (Remedy)

For Marriage: Women facing delays in marriage or Sevvai Dosham (Mars affliction) worship Goddess Kathyayini Amman here to find a suitable partner.

For Wealth & Success: Devotees pray to the North-facing Valampuri Vinayagar for business success, career growth, and the removal of financial burdens.

Those born under the Karasai Karana attain prosperity in life by worshipping here at a time when their day of birth and the Karasai *Karana* coincide.

What to do when you visit

  • Observe the rare two-handed Valampuri Ganesha and the broken left tusk, which predates many standard Ganesha iconographies.
  • Look for the exquisite bas-relief of Pasupatheeswarar—a sculpture of a cow offering milk to a Shiva Lingam.
  • Make sure to visit all three Lingams (Thiruveesar, Marudheesar, and Senchadeswarar) and the three Goddesses (Sivagami Amman, Vadamalar Mangaiamman, and Soundara Nayagi Amman) who all bless devotees in this single temple complex.
