Sri Kathra Sundareswarar Temple
Kathra Sundareswarar Temple (also referred to as Gatra or Kaartha Sundareshwarar) is a significant ancient Shiva temple located in Kanjanagaram, a quiet village near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu.
It is most renowned as the exclusive Parihara Sthalam (remedy temple) for everyone born under the Karthigai (Krithika) Nakshatra. It is also the birthplace of Manakanchara Nayanar, one of the revered 63 Saivite Nayanmars.
A remarkable feature of this temple is that the presiding deity, Lord Shiva, manifests as a Swayambu Lingam (self-manifested) facing West, which is considered exceptionally rare and powerful. The Goddess here is Sri Tungabalasthanambikai, who distinctively holds a parrot that continuously chants the Vedas.

Best Time to Visit
There are three especially good choices, depending on your purpose.
For Karthigai Nakshatra Parigaram
Any month is suitable — choose the day on which Karthigai Nakshatra occurs.
For Karthigai Festival
Karthigai month (November–December) is especially meaningful.
For comfortable travel
November to February is generally preferable because the weather is more comfortable than the peak summer months.
Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam
This temple holds deep cosmic ties to the Karthigai Nakshatra because it is the exact place where Lord Shiva generated the six sparks to create Lord Karthikeya (the presiding deity of the Karthigai star), and it is the birthplace of the Karthigai maidens.
Consequently, it serves as the ultimate remedy center for anyone born under this star. Additionally, worshipping a West-facing Lingam is said in scriptures to yield a thousand times more spiritual merit than an East-facing one, making it an incredibly potent spot for clearing karmic debts and severe doshas.
Who should worship?
- People born under the Karthigai (Krithika) Nakshatra.
- Individuals facing persistent obstacles in getting married.
- Couples struggling with childbearing issues.
- Those afflicted by planetary doshas or unexplained chronic diseases.
- Devotees of Lord Muruga seeking to trace and worship the spiritual origins of His birth.
Mantra & Slokam

Sthala Puranam (Legend)
According to legends, the sages and Devas were being mercilessly tortured by the demon brothers Surapadman, Singamukhan, and Tarakasuran. Unable to bear their atrocities, the Devas appealed to Goddess Parvathi for protection. At that time, Lord Shiva was absorbed in deep meditation, performing a fierce penance called "Katrajyothi Yoga" (meditation in the form of divine fire). Knowing that only Shiva could create a force powerful enough to destroy the demons, Parvathi approached Him, interrupting His profound yoga.
Furious at the interruption, Lord Shiva opened His third eye, from which six intense, golden sparks of fire burst forth. These six sparks later merged to form Lord Muruga (Karthikeya), who ultimately vanquished the demons. Since the glorious golden light (Kanchana Prakasam) emerged from Shiva here, the place came to be known as Kanchana Nagaram (Golden Town), which over time transformed into Kanjanagaram. Because Lord Shiva produced the six sparks that formed Karthikeya, He is revered here as Kathra (or Karthika) Sundareswarar. The six Karthigai maidens (Karthigai Pendir) who raised Lord Muruga during his childhood are also believed to have been born here.
Parigaram (Remedy)
For Karthigai Star Natives: Visit the temple on your birth star day (Karthigai nakshatra day in any Tamil month) to offer special Poojas to Lord Kathra Sundareswarar.
Pradosham Lighting: Lighting sand lamps (Muzhu Manal Deepam or Agal Vilakku) in front of the sanctum during Pradosham days (the 13th day of the lunar cycle) is highly recommended to absolve sins and planetary effects.
Sumangali Pooja: Unmarried women facing delays, and married women seeking a long, happy marital life, perform "Sumangali Pooja" for Goddess Tungabalasthanambikai. Performing Abhishekam to the Goddess with water brought from holy rivers is also customary.
Worshipping the Parrot: The Goddess holds a parrot on Her left shoulder called "Vedamirtha Keeram," which is believed to be Lord Shiva Himself chanting the Vedas. Having Darshan of this parrot on Fridays or on Karthigai star days specifically removes obstacles in marriage.
What to do when you visit
A simple darshan sequence can be:
Vinayaka → Gatra Sundareshwarar → Thungabalasthanambigai → Murugan → other available shrines → Theertham/Prasadam
For a Karthigai-born devotee, it is meaningful to tell the priest your:
- Name
- Nakshatra
- Rasi
and request Archana according to the temple's practice.
Spend a few minutes in silent prayer after Archana rather than immediately leaving.
Before You Visit
Kanjanagaram is a quiet rural village. Because there are fewer regular visitors, the temple is kept open only for very short, strictly limited periods (1 hour in the morning, 1 hour in the evening), as the priest travels from another nearby temple to perform the rituals. It is highly recommended to call the priest in advance to confirm his availability before making the trip. Also, purchase pooja items like oil, ghee, wicks, and flowers from Mayiladuthurai town itself, as the local village shops might have limited or no supplies.
Special Rituals / Abhishekam
The important worship practices include:
1. Nakshatra Archana
The most relevant worship for Karthigai-born devotees is Archana performed in one's name and Nakshatra.
2. Pradosha Worship
Pradosham is traditionally considered another suitable occasion for worshipping Gatra Sundareshwarar. Traditional sources specifically recommend Pradosham along with the Karthigai birth-star day.
3. Abhishekam
Regular Shiva temple worship includes Abhishekam and other daily rituals. For a special/private Abhishekam, availability should be confirmed with the temple priest.
4. Lamp Worship
Devotees may light lamps according to the temple's permitted practice.
Festivals
Karthigai Deepam (November-December) is the most vibrant festival here, drawing significant crowds due to its connection to the star.
Monthly Pradoshams are grandly celebrated.
Maha Shivaratri (February-March).
Skanda Sashti (October-November) holds profound importance as this is considered the spiritual birthplace of Lord Murugan.
For this particular temple, Karthigai Nakshatra worship itself is more important than simply choosing a generic annual festival.
