Sri Saraparameswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Thirucherai, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. It is a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised by the Nayanmars Thirugnana Sambandar and Appar, and is traditionally counted among the important Shiva temples on the southern bank of the River Cauvery.

The Moolavar (presiding deity) is: Sri Saraparameswarar, also known as Senneriyappar / Gnanaparameswarar.

The Goddess is: Sri Gnanambikai / Sri Gnanavalli Amman.

The main deity is traditionally regarded as a Swayambhu Lingam.

The temple's most important parihara shrine is Sri Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar, also known as Kadan Nivarthi Eswarar, meaning the Lord who grants relief from debt.

Devotees traditionally worship this shrine for relief from financial debts, poverty and other forms of indebtedness, and also for prayers connected with employment, marriage and prosperity.

Best Time to Visit

If your purpose is debt relief, Mondays are more important than a particular month because the traditional parihara is based on Monday worship.

However, for the most unique temple experience, Masi (February–March) is the best period.

The reason is the spectacular Surya Puja on Masi 13, 14 and 15, when sunlight falls upon the Moolavar and the Goddess's feet. Special worship is conducted throughout Masi.

For a quieter visit, choose an ordinary weekday outside major festival periods.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

The temple houses a very special sub-shrine for Lord Shiva called "Runa Vimochana Lingeswarar". Runa means debt, and Vimochana means relief or liberation. Sage Markandeya is said to have installed this Lingam to help devotees clear their financial and karmic debts, making it the ultimate Parihara Sthalam for solving financial crises.

Traditional devotees seek blessings here for:

  • Relief from financial debts
  • Freedom from persistent borrowing
  • Removal of poverty
  • Financial stability
  • Improvement in livelihood
  • Employment opportunities
  • Business improvement
  • Marriage-related obstacles
  • Child-related prayers
  • General prosperity
  • Relief from karmic burdens
Sthala Puranam (Legend)

Thirucherai has several important legends associated with Lord Shiva, Sage Markandeya, Sage Dowmya and the Sun God.

Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar – Markandeya's Worship

One of the principal legends concerns Sage Markandeya.

Markandeya installed a Shiva Lingam for his personal worship near the Vinayaka shrine and worshipped it with devotion. This Lingam came to be known as Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar—the Lord who grants release from debts.

The tradition interprets debt in two ways:

  • Debts of this present life, particularly financial obligations.
  • Spiritual/karmic debts associated with one's birth and previous actions.

Devotees therefore pray to Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar for freedom from burdens and for a stable, prosperous life.

Dowmya Maharishi

The temple is also associated with Dowmya Maharishi, who is mentioned in the Mahabharata tradition as a spiritual guide to the Pandavas and as having instructed Kunti. Temple tradition holds that he attained liberation here.

The Sun God

Another important feature is the temple's connection with Surya worship.

The traditional account says that the Sun God worshipped Shiva at this place. As a result, every year in Masi, on the 13th, 14th and 15th days, sunlight falls directly upon the Moolavar and subsequently upon the feet of Gnanavalli Amman.

This remarkable event is observed as Surya Puja.

Name Thirucherai

The name Thirucherai is traditionally explained in more than one way. One tradition connects it with the old name Thirusaram, while another connects the name with the area's agricultural landscape and the word Cheru (mud/wetland).

Parigaram (Remedy)

The core remedy involves visiting the temple for 11 consecutive Mondays. Devotees perform Archana to Runa Vimochana Lingeswarar for 10 Mondays, and on the 11th Monday, they perform a special Abhishekam and offer sweet pongal as prasadam. If you cannot visit 11 times, a single sincere visit with archana also yields immense benefits.

Who should worship

  • People suffering from severe financial debts, business losses, or heavy loans they cannot repay.
  • Individuals facing legal issues related to property.
  • Those seeking relief from ancestral karmic debts (Pitru Dosham).

What to do when you visit

First, take a purifying wash at the temple tank. Worship the presiding deities Saraparameswarar and Gnanambikai. Then proceed to the Runa Vimochana Lingeswarar shrine, offer Vilva leaves, and perform your Archana. Do not miss worshipping the three Durgas, especially if you visit during Rahu Kalam.

The three-Durga arrangement—Shiva Durga, Vaishnavi Durga and Vishnu Durga—is one of the temple's distinctive features.

Before You Visit

  • If undertaking the 11-Monday parihara, plan all 11 Mondays in advance.
  • Confirm the current procedure and fees with the temple before starting.
  • If you want Abhishekam, confirm availability beforehand.
  • Mondays and Fridays can be relatively busy because of special devotional practices.
  • For Masi Surya Puja, arrive early.
  • Wear modest traditional clothing.
  • Carry drinking water during hot weather.
  • Allow sufficient time because the temple contains several important shrines.
  • Do not rush the 11-Monday practice merely as a formality; maintain the worship consistently.
  • For long-distance travel, confirm the temple opening time by phone.
