Thiruparkadal Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple - Thiruvonam Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam
Thiruparkadal Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple is one of the most remarkable Vishnu temples in northern Tamil Nadu and is located at Thiruparkadal near Kaveripakkam in the present-day Ranipet District.
The temple is particularly revered as a Thiruvonam (Shravana) Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam. Devotees born under Thiruvonam Nakshatra visit this sacred temple on their Janma Nakshatra day and on other traditionally significant days to seek the blessings of Lord Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal.
The greatest uniqueness of the temple is the form of the presiding deity. Lord Vishnu appears in a standing posture upon the Avudayar of a Shiva Lingam. This extraordinary form conveys the sacred truth that Shiva and Vishnu are not separate and that the Supreme Divine is one.
The temple is also associated with Pundarika Maharishi, whose devotion is central to the Sthala Puranam. Because Lord Vishnu appeared before the Maharishi in a gracious and revealing form, the Lord came to be worshipped here as Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal.
The temple follows the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition. The sacred temple tank is known as Pundarika Pushkarini, and the temple's traditional Sthala Vrikshas are Vilvam and Tulasi.
Thiruparkadal is also famous for its neighbouring Sri Athi Ranganatha Perumal Temple, where Lord Ranganatha appears in reclining posture. The two temples together form a spiritually significant pilgrimage centre and are traditionally associated with the earthly manifestation of the divine Thiruparkadal, the Cosmic Ocean of Milk.

Best Time to Visit
Visiting during the Tamil month of Purattasi (Sep-Oct) or Margazhi (Dec-Jan) is highly auspicious. However, for Nakshatra Parigaram, visiting on the Thiruvonam Nakshatra day of any month yields complete astrological benefits.
Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam
Thiruparkadal is traditionally regarded as the Parihara Sthalam for Thiruvonam Nakshatra.
Thiruvonam is the Nakshatra of Lord Vishnu and is identified with Shravana Nakshatra in Sanskrit. The Nakshatra is traditionally associated with listening, learning, wisdom, discipline, devotion and the pursuit of higher knowledge.
The temple's special association with Thiruvonam arises from the traditional story of Thiruvonam Nakshatra Devi, one of the 27 Nakshatra consorts associated with Chandra.
When Chandra faced the consequences of a curse and his brilliance began to diminish, Thiruvonam Nakshatra Devi undertook worship and penance here. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Prasanna Venkatesa appeared and granted relief to Chandra.
This sacred connection made Thiruparkadal an important place of worship for people born under Thiruvonam.
The temple is also connected with Chandra-related worship. Therefore, devotees traditionally visit on:
- Thiruvonam Nakshatra
- Their Janma Nakshatra day
- Rohini Nakshatra
- Hasta Nakshatra
- Third Crescent Moon day
- Ekadashi
- Pradosham and other special days
The central message of the temple is that sincere devotion removes confusion, restores spiritual strength and brings divine grace.
Who should worship?
- Individuals born under the Shravana (Thiruvonam) Nakshatra.
- People undergoing Moon (Chandra) Mahadasa or Bhukti.
- Devotees of Lord Vishnu (specifically Lord Hayagriva/Vamana).
- People suffering from hearing/ear problems, educational blockages, or lack of peace of mind.
Mantra & Slokam
Thiruvonam is ruled by the Moon (Chandra) and Lord Vishnu. Chanting this grants academic excellence, a calm mind, and spiritual progression.
Om Maha Sravanaaya Vidmahe Punya Slokaaya Dheemahi Thanno Sravana Prachodayaat
Sthala Puranam (Legend)
The Sthala Puranam of Thiruparkadal is closely connected with Pundarika Maharishi, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Pundarika Maharishi observed Ekadashi with great devotion. He would complete his worship of Lord Vishnu before taking food. During one Ekadashi, however, he was delayed on his pilgrimage and reached the ancient settlement known as Narayana Chaturvedhimangalam.
The Maharishi entered the temple expecting to have darshan of Lord Vishnu. To his surprise, he saw a Shiva Lingam in the sanctum. Since he had come specifically to worship Vishnu and complete his Ekadashi observance, he became deeply disappointed and began to leave the temple.
At that moment, an elderly man approached him and asked why he was leaving with such sorrow.
The Maharishi explained that he had come to worship Vishnu but had found Shiva in the sanctum instead.
The elderly man told him that the Lord he had come to worship was indeed present inside the sanctum and asked him to return and look again.
When Pundarika Maharishi entered the sanctum once more, he received an extraordinary darshan.
Lord Vishnu appeared before him in a standing posture upon the Avudayar of the Shiva Lingam, holding the conch and discus and showing the Abhaya Mudra.
The Maharishi was filled with joy and realised that Shiva and Vishnu are one Supreme Reality.
When he turned around to thank the elderly man, the man had disappeared. The Maharishi then understood that the elderly man himself was Lord Vishnu who had come to reveal this great truth to him.
Lord Vishnu gave the Maharishi the divine message that there was no need to distinguish between Shiva and Vishnu and that devotees who worshipped Him at this sacred place would receive the spiritual merit of worshipping Him at the celestial Thiruparkadal.
Because the Lord appeared prasanna, with grace and compassion before Pundarika Maharishi, He became known as Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal.
The sacred place thereafter became known as Thiruparkadal.
Parigaram (Remedy)
For Thiruvonam Nakshatram: Individuals born under the Thiruvonam star should visit this temple on their star day. Performing Thirumanjanam (sacred bath) for the Lord and offering Tulsi garlands clears educational blockages and financial instability.
For Family Unity: Since the Lord here represents the unity of two supreme forces (Shiva and Vishnu), families facing bitter separations, divorces, or sibling rivalries pray here together. Offering a combined garland of Vilvam (for Shiva) and Tulsi (for Vishnu) restores harmony.
Education & Focus: Students lacking concentration pray to Lord Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal here for mental focus and high academic achievements.
What to do when you visit
Enter the temple and bow before the Dwajasthambam. In the main sanctum, closely observe the base of the presiding deity—you will clearly see Lord Vishnu standing on the circular Shiva Linga Peetam (Avudaiyar), an extremely rare sight. Note the third eye (Netrikkan) on the Lord's forehead. After worshipping Him, proceed to the shrine of Goddess Alarmelmangai Thaayar. Also, visit the separate shrines of Lord Anjaneya and Pundareeka Maharishi. In the outer corridor, you can find exquisite ancient carvings of the Dasavatara (Ten avatars of Vishnu).
Before You Visit
Thiruparkadal is a serene, small village situated just a few kilometers off the busy Chennai-Bangalore highway near Kaveripakkam. While basic shops are available, if you plan to offer specific items like Tulsi, Vilvam, or special garlands, it is advisable to buy them in Kaveripakkam town or Ocheri before reaching the temple. Uniquely, there is another grand temple right next to this one—the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple—make sure you have enough time to visit both.
Special Rituals / Abhishekam
The temple follows the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition.
Devotees may arrange appropriate worship through the temple, depending on the day's schedule and temple regulations.

Festivals
Important festivals and worship occasions associated with the temple include:
Vaikuntha Ekadashi
Vaikuntha Ekadashi is one of the most important Vaishnava observances of the year. Special worship and processions are conducted. A unique feature of this temple is that it does not have a conventional separate Sorgavasal in the usual form found in many Vishnu temples. Instead, the temple has three entrances associated with the sanctum, giving the devotee a distinctive form of darshan during Vaikuntha Ekadashi.
Thiruvonam Nakshatra
Thiruvonam is the principal Nakshatra associated with this temple. Devotees born under Thiruvonam visit the temple on their Janma Nakshatra day.
Ekadashi
Ekadashi days are especially important for Vishnu worship.
Pradosham
Pradosham is also traditionally observed at this temple because of the temple's unique Shiva-Vishnu unity.
Pournami and Amavasya
Full Moon and New Moon days are also associated with special worship.
