Arulmigu Brahmapureeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Thirupattur near Siruganur in Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu. The place is also traditionally known by the names Tiruppidavur and Tiruppadaiyur.

The presiding deity is Sri Brahmapureeswarar, a Swayambhu form of Lord Shiva, and the Goddess is Sri Brahmanayaki, also known as Sri Brahma Sampath Gowri.

The temple is particularly famous for its separate shrine for Lord Brahma, the 12 Shiva Lingas worshipped by Brahma, and the traditional belief that Lord Shiva granted Brahma the power to bless devotees with a favourable change in destiny.

Lord Brahma is represented here as a large seated deity in Padmasana, making the shrine especially distinctive. The temple complex also has an association with Maharishi Patanjali and his Jeeva Samadhi.

Best Time to Visit

You can visit this temple throughout the year. However, Panguni (March - April) is highly auspicious due to the Brahmotsavam and the sunlight falling on the Lingam. Any Thursday is the best day of the week to visit.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

Thirupattur is especially regarded as a Parihara Sthalam for destiny-related difficulties.

The traditional reasons include:

  • Brahma himself worshipped Shiva here.
  • Brahma regained his creative power here.
  • Shiva is believed to have granted Brahma the ability to bless devotees with favourable changes.
  • There is a separate shrine for Brahma.
  • Brahma is traditionally regarded as the Adhidevata of Guru (Jupiter).
  • Special worship is performed on Thursdays.
  • The 12 Shiva Lingas represent an important part of Brahma's penance and worship.

Therefore devotees traditionally visit the temple seeking relief or improvement in areas such as:

  • Repeated obstacles in life
  • Career stagnation
  • Business difficulties
  • Marriage-related obstacles
  • Family problems
  • Childbirth-related prayers
  • Horoscope-related concerns
  • Guru-related dosha/parihara worship
  • Desire for a favourable change in circumstances

Traditional sources specifically associate the temple with Guru Pariharam, because Brahma is regarded as Guru's Adhidevata.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

According to the traditional sthala puranam, Lord Brahma was entrusted with the work of creation. Over time, pride arose in him regarding his creative power.

According to the legend, Shiva removed Brahma's fifth head and Brahma lost his creative authority. Brahma then undertook pilgrimage to various Shiva temples seeking forgiveness and liberation from the curse.

Eventually, Brahma came to Tiruppidavur (present-day Thirupattur). Here he established and worshipped 12 Shiva Lingas and performed intense worship of Lord Shiva.

The 12 Lingas traditionally associated with Brahma's worship are:

  1. Brahmapureeswarar
  2. Pazhamalainathar
  3. Patala Eswarar
  4. Suddha Rathineswarar
  5. Thayumanavar
  6. Saptarishiswarar
  7. Kalathinathar
  8. Jambukeswarar
  9. Kailasanathar
  10. Arunachaleswarar
  11. Ekambareswarar
  12. Mandukanathar

Different traditional sources vary slightly in the ordering/naming of some of these Lingas, but the 12-Linga tradition itself is a central feature of the temple.

Pleased with Brahma's devotion, Lord Shiva granted him relief and restored his creative power.

The tradition further says that Shiva instructed Brahma to bless devotees who sincerely worship at Thirupattur and to help bring about a favourable transformation in their destiny.

Because Brahma's own destiny was transformed here, the temple became popularly known as a shrine where devotees pray for a positive change in their destiny or thalai ezhuthu. This is a traditional religious belief, not a guaranteed prediction or outcome.

Parigaram (Remedy)

The core remedy for changing one's destiny involves performing a special pooja to Lord Brahma. Devotees offer a yellow cloth (Vastram) and yellow flowers (like Sevvanthi). The most important ritual is lighting 36 ghee lamps (representing the 36 Tatvas or cosmic principles) in the Brahma shrine and circumambulating (walking around) his shrine 9 times.

Who should worship

  • People facing constant failures, bad luck, and unexplained obstacles in life.
  • Those seeking a good job, career growth, or relief from heavy debts.
  • Individuals facing delays in marriage or seeking the boon of a child.
  • People whose astrological charts have severe doshas (like Guru Dosham).
  • Anyone seeking peace of mind and relief from chronic illnesses.

What to do when you visit

A good traditional order is:

  1. Sri Brahmapureeswarar
  2. Sri Brahma Sampath Gowri
  3. Lord Brahma
  4. 12 Shiva Lingas
  5. Maharishi Patanjali Jeeva Samadhi
  6. Sthala Vriksham – Magizha tree
  7. Brahma Theertham

If visiting specifically for destiny-related parihara, spend some quiet time before Brahma and make a sincere prayer rather than treating the visit merely as a ritual transaction.

Before You Visit

  • If travelling specifically on Thursday, arrive early because Thursday is traditionally a busy/special day.
  • If you want a particular abhishekam or archana, confirm the availability beforehand.
  • If bringing your horoscope for worship, keep the original/usable copy safely.
  • Wear modest traditional clothing.
  • Carry drinking water, especially during hot months.
  • Allow enough time to see the 12 Lingas rather than rushing through the temple.
  • Elderly devotees should move comfortably because the temple complex involves several shrines.
  • Festival-day timings may differ from normal timings.
  • Confirm timings by phone before a long-distance journey.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Thursdays are the most auspicious days here. Special Abhishekam (Thirumanjanam) is performed for Lord Brahma using turmeric. Every year during the Tamil month of Panguni (March-April), the sun's rays directly fall on the main Shiva Lingam for three days, during which special poojas are conducted.
