Sri Swetharanyeswarar Temple at Thiruvenkadu, near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, is one of the most important Shaiva temples of Tamil Nadu.

The presiding deity is Lord Swetharanyeswarar, also known as Venkattu Nathar, and the Goddess is Brahmavidyambigai / Brahmavidya Nayaki. The temple is one of the Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalams, having been praised by the Nayanmars. It is also one of the Navagraha Sthalams associated with Budhan (Mercury).

The name Thiruvenkadu is traditionally explained from Ven (white) + Kadu (forest), while Sanskrit Sweta means white and Aranya means forest. Thus Swetharanyeswarar means the Lord of the Sacred White Forest.

The temple is especially famous for:

  • Swetharanyeswarar
  • Brahmavidyambigai
  • Budhan Bhagavan
  • Aghora Murthy
  • Nataraja
  • Three sacred Theerthams — Agni, Surya and Chandra
  • Three Sthala Vrikshams — Vadaval, Vilvam and Kondrai
  • Its association with Aadi Chidambaram
  • Its importance as a Budhan Parihara Sthalam

The temple is also traditionally regarded as a place where Shiva manifested in the fierce Aghora Murthy form to subdue the demon Maruthuvan.

Thiruvenkadu is revered as one of the six sacred places considered equivalent to Kashi. It is believed that worshipping the Rudra Pada at this sacred temple, along with Lord Budha, one of the Navagrahas, helps remove the sins of past births and brings greater blessings and well-being in life.

Best Time to Visit

If you want to experience the temple at its most festive and traditional, Masi (February–March) is an excellent choice because of the major Indra Vizha.

However, there is a trade-off:

Masi:

  • Major festival atmosphere
  • Chariot festival
  • Special processions
  • Aghora Murthy-related celebrations
  • Large crowds

Every Wednesday of the week is considered the ideal day to visit.

Why this temple is a Parigara Sthalam

Since Budha (Mercury) himself performed deep penance here to overcome obstacles and gain his celestial status, the temple became the ultimate remedial site for anything associated with Mercury. It is especially powerful for intellectual growth, communication, education, and business success.

Why is this temple a Pitru Dosha Sthalam?

Just as Gaya is famous for the Vishnu Padam (Footprints of Lord Vishnu), Thiruvenkadu is home to the sacred Rudra Padam (Footprints of Lord Shiva/Rudra) located under the holy Vada Vruksham (Banyan tree) near the Chandra Theertham. It is believed that performing ancestral rites at this exact spot directly reaches and satisfies the ancestors, granting them salvation (Moksha) and relieving the family from generational curses (Pitru Dosha).

Who should worship?

  • Students facing difficulties in education, lack of focus, or memory loss.
  • Business people, traders, and entrepreneurs seeking financial and commercial growth.
  • Writers, journalists, public speakers, and people in IT or communication fields.
  • Individuals suffering from skin diseases, nervous disorders, or speech impediments (like stammering).
  • Those with a weak or debilitated Mercury (Budhan) in their astrological birth chart.

How to perform Parigaram at home

Fasting: Observe a fast on Wednesdays.

Lighting Lamp: Light a ghee lamp in front of Lord Vishnu or Budhan on Wednesday mornings.

Chanting: Chant the Budha Gayatri Mantra 108 times, or recite/listen to the Vishnu Sahasranamam.

Offering (Naivedyam): Offer a dish made of Green Gram (Pachai Payiru) like sundal, and use Tulsi leaves or White Kanthali flowers for pooja.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

One of the principal legends of Thiruvenkadu concerns the demon Maruthuvan.

According to the traditional Sthala Purana, Maruthuvan obtained powerful boons from Brahma and began troubling the Devas. The Devas sought refuge in Lord Shiva. Shiva instructed them to live in Thiruvenkadu in disguise.

Maruthuvan eventually discovered them and fought against them.

The demon performed penance to Lord Shiva and obtained a Trident (Trishula). He used it against Nandi, Shiva's sacred bull, injuring him.

When Shiva learned of Nandi's injuries, he became furious. From one of His five faces, Aghora, manifested the fierce form known as Aghora Murthy.

Aghora Murthy confronted Maruthuvan. The demon, overwhelmed by the divine power of this form, surrendered to Shiva.

This is why the Aghora Murthy shrine is one of the defining features of Thiruvenkadu. The traditional story also explains the distinctive marks/openings seen on Nandi associated with the attack.

Brahmavidyambigai

Another important tradition concerns Brahma.

Brahma is said to have worshipped Shiva here, and Goddess Parvati imparted divine knowledge to him. Because She bestowed Vidya (knowledge) upon Brahma, She became known as Brahmavidyambigai — the Goddess who grants knowledge.

Therefore, devotees traditionally worship the Goddess here for education, knowledge, wisdom and mastery of learning.

Budhan

The temple is also associated with Budha (Mercury). Traditional accounts state that Budhan worshipped Lord Shiva at Thiruvenkadu and obtained relief from his affliction/curse.

This association is the basis for the temple's identity as the Budhan Navagraha Sthalam.

Parigaram (Remedy)

Devotees performing Budha pariharam offer green garments (Vastram), green moong dal (Pachai Payir), and white lotus flowers. Lighting ghee lamps and performing Archana on Wednesdays is considered highly effective for neutralizing Mercury afflictions.

Pitru Dosha Parigara Details

Holy Dip: Devotees must first take a purifying bath in the Theertham.

Tarpanam: Rites such as Tarpanam, Shraddham, or Pinda Daanam (offering rice balls) are performed specifically near the Rudra Padam or under the Banyan tree.

Worship: After completing the rites, devotees offer prayers to Lord Aghora Murthy and Swetharanyeswarar.

Best Days: Amavasya (New Moon days), Mahalaya Paksha (the 15-day ancestral period in Sep/Oct), and Sundays are considered the most auspicious times to perform these remedies here.

Benefits of the Remedy

  • Clears generational curses and unexplained obstacles in life caused by the displeasure of ancestors.
  • Removes blockages related to childbirth (Santhana Bhagyam) and marriage.
  • Brings peace to the departed souls and invites their blessings for family prosperity and health.

What to do when you visit

Upon arrival, take a holy dip in the three sacred tanks (Soola Theertham, Surya Theertham, and Chandra Theertham) if possible. First, worship Lord Aghora Murthy, then proceed to the dedicated shrine of Budhan, and finally offer prayers to the main deity Swetharanyeswarar and Goddess Brahma Vidya Nayaki.

Before You Visit

  • Wednesday is traditionally preferred for Budhan Pariharam.
  • Arrive early if you want a peaceful darshan.
  • The temple is fairly large, so allow at least 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit.
  • Wear modest temple-appropriate clothing.
  • Carry water, especially during hot months.
  • If you intend to perform a specific Pariharam, ask the temple priest first about the current procedure.
  • Do not assume that every offering sold outside the temple is officially required.
  • If you want to visit the sacred tanks, check whether bathing is currently permitted.
  • Festival days can be considerably more crowded.
  • Temple timings can change during festivals and special events.

Special Rituals / Abhishekam

Thiruvenkadu has several important ritual traditions.

Aghora Murthy Worship

The worship of Aghora Murthy is one of the temple's most distinctive features. Special Agorapooja is traditionally associated with the temple, including special worship performed at night on particular occasions.

Spatika Lingam Abhishekam

The temple has a Spatika Lingam associated with its Nataraja shrine. Traditional accounts state that special abhishekam is performed regularly.

Nataraja Abhishekam

Nataraja worship has special importance because Thiruvenkadu is traditionally called Aadi Chidambaram, linking it with Shiva's cosmic dance.

Budhan Pariharam

Devotees can perform archana and other available special worship at the Budhan shrine, particularly on Wednesdays.

Learn More

In planetary astrology, Budhan (Mercury) is considered the "Prince." It represents intellect, logic, memory, communication, and commerce. Astrologically, it is known as the Vidya Karaka (significator of education) and Vyapara Karaka (significator of business). A strongly placed Mercury gives a sharp, analytical mind, excellent speaking skills, and a great sense of humor. A weak Mercury can lead to anxiety, indecisiveness, poor academic performance, and communication gaps.

Charity / Daana

The best day to perform charity for Mercury is Wednesday. Donating educational materials (books, pens, notebooks) to underprivileged students is highly effective. You can also donate Green Gram (Moong Dal), green clothing, or bronze items to the needy.
