Vaniyambadi Sri Athitheeswarar Temple
Sri Athitheeswarar Temple at Old Vaniyambadi is an ancient Shiva temple with a history extending for more than a thousand years. The temple is particularly revered as the Parihara Sthalam for Punarpoosam (Punarvasu) Nakshatra.
Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Sri Athitheeswarar, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Periyanayaki. A separate shrine for Goddess Saraswati adds a distinctive spiritual character to the temple.
The temple is especially associated with Punarpoosam Nakshatra, whose presiding deity is Aditi, the divine mother of the Devas. According to the sacred tradition of this temple, Aditi worshipped Lord Shiva here on Punarpoosam days and received His blessings. Because Aditi worshipped Shiva at this sacred place, the Lord came to be known as Athitheeswarar.
The temple is also celebrated as the sacred place where Goddess Saraswati regained her speech and sang before Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This tradition is closely connected with the name Vaniyambadi itself—the place where Vani sang.
Because of this powerful association with Saraswati, the temple is particularly revered by students, teachers, musicians, artists, speakers and those seeking excellence in education, speech and the arts.
The temple's antiquity is also reflected in its inscriptions. Heritage research places its original construction in the Pallava period, around the 7th–8th century, with later contributions from the Cholas, Gangas and Vijayanagara rulers. Inscriptions associated with Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I and Kulothunga Chola are recorded here.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)
One of the most beautiful legends associated with Athitheeswarar Temple concerns Brahma and Goddess Saraswati.
Once, Brahma spoke with pride about his role as the creator of the universe. He declared that because he performed the work of creation, he held the foremost position among the divine beings.
Saraswati, hearing Brahma's words, smiled at his pride.
Brahma became angry and cursed Saraswati, causing her to lose her speech.
The Goddess, distressed by the curse, came to the earthly realm and undertook worship and penance at sacred places seeking liberation from the curse.
Eventually, Saraswati came to the sacred region of Vaniyambadi and worshipped Lord Athitheeswarar and Goddess Parvati.
Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva blessed Saraswati and asked her to sing.
Saraswati began to sing with divine sweetness. Her voice flowed once again, and the curse upon her speech was removed.
Thus, the place became sacred as the place where Vani—the Goddess of speech—sang.
This sacred event became associated with the ancient name Vaniyammaipadi, which later evolved into Vaniyambadi.
Furthermore, it is believed that Lord Brahma, Lord Surya (Sun God), and Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here.
Aditi and the Punarpoosam Nakshatra
Another central legend of this temple concerns Aditi, the wife of Sage Kashyapa and the divine mother of the Devas.
Aditi desired the blessings of Lord Shiva and undertook worship here on every Punarpoosam Nakshatra day.
Through her devotion, she received divine blessings and became the mother of the Devas.
Because Aditi performed worship at this sacred place, Lord Shiva came to be known as Athitheeswarar.
This tradition establishes the temple's special relationship with Punarpoosam / Punarvasu Nakshatra, whose presiding deity is Aditi.
Parigaram (Remedy)
Nakshatra Parigaram: Individuals born under the Punarpoosam star should visit on their star day. They offer a garland made of Punnaigai (Alexandrian laurel) flowers to the Lord.
For Speech/Education: Parents of children experiencing delayed speech or stammering perform special poojas with honey and offer sweet pongal to seek Lord Athitheeswarar and Goddess Vani's blessings.
For Marriage: Offering yellow cloth to Lord Dakshinamurthy and a silk saree to Goddess Periyanayaki on Thursdays helps clear obstacles to marriage.
What to do when you visit
A meaningful visit can follow this order:
Vinayaka → Athitheeswarar → Periyanayaki → Saraswati → Dakshinamurthy → Subramania → Navagrahas → Chandikeswarar
The exact order can be adjusted according to the temple's current arrangement.
Spend a few quiet moments before Lord Athitheeswarar and mentally surrender the difficulty that brought you to the temple.
If your purpose is education or artistic success, spend additional time before Saraswati.
If your purpose is Punarpoosam Nakshatra Pariharam, make your Janma Nakshatra the central focus of the prayer.
Before You Visit
Vaniyambadi is a bustling commercial town known for its leather industry. The temple is located somewhat in the interior near the riverbed, so navigating through narrow streets might be required. If you wish to offer Punnai flowers (which are rare), try to source them from major flower markets in Vellore or your hometown before arriving, as local shops might not stock them regularly.
Special Rituals / Abhishekam
Performing Abhishekam with Panchamirtham, Milk, and pure Honey on Punarvasu star days is considered highly auspicious. During the Navaratri festival, special Saraswati Pooja rituals are conducted directly for the Shiva Lingam, honoring the legend of Vani.
